Never name a number first

When asked for your salary expectation, redirect: 'I'd love to understand the full compensation package and budget range first.' The first number anchors the negotiation — make sure it's theirs, not yours.

Use the silence technique

After they make an offer, say 'Thank you — I need a few days to consider this carefully.' Then stop talking. Silence creates pressure. 80% of employers will improve their offer before you say another word.

Negotiate the whole package

Base salary is just one lever. Equity, signing bonus, remote flexibility, learning budget, and title are all negotiable. A $5k signing bonus and $3k learning budget is effectively an $8k raise.

Anchor high, justify with data

Use salary data from Glassdoor, Levels.fyi, and LinkedIn to anchor 15–20% above your target. Say: 'Based on market data for this role in this city, I'm targeting $X. Here's why.' Data removes emotion.
